Victor Ivanovich Zaretsky (1925–1990) is a world-famous Ukrainian painter whose works have been presented at leading international auctions and continue to captivate collectors with their emotional power, stylistic originality, and cultural significance. His art is highly valued for its synthesis of realism and modernist tendencies, as well as for its deep psychological insight and symbolic depth.

Zaretsky’s paintings are marked by expressive color, refined composition, and a distinctive personal style that made him one of the brightest representatives of Ukrainian art of the second half of the 20th century. Often referred to as the “Ukrainian Modigliani,” his works reveal both elegance of form and profound spiritual resonance, making them highly desirable for private collections and museums around the world.

Born on February 10, 1925 in Bila Tserkva, Zaretsky studied at the Kyiv Art Institute (1947–1953) under the guidance of Serhii Hryhoriev and Mykhailo Khmelko. He became a member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine in 1956. Together with his wife, the artist Alla Horska, he was an active participant in the Ukrainian Sixtiers movement, which sought to affirm national identity and artistic freedom in the face of Soviet censorship. His life and work were inseparably linked with civic courage, creative innovation, and cultural resistance.

Zaretsky’s paintings are preserved in the National Art Museum of Ukraine, the Tretyakov Gallery, and numerous private collections worldwide. Regularly presented at international auctions, his works remain highly sought after by collectors who value both their artistic brilliance and their historical importance as part of Ukraine’s cultural heritage.
