Mikhail Fyodorovich Larionov (1881–1964) is a world-famous Ukrainian-born painter and avant-garde innovator whose works have been presented at leading international auctions and remain highly prized by collectors worldwide. He is celebrated as one of the founders of the Russian and Ukrainian avant-garde, co-creator of Rayonism, and a central figure in early 20th-century modernism.

Larionov’s art is admired for its daring experimentation, expressive color, and originality. From impressionistic landscapes and primitivist motifs to cubo-futurism and ultimately Rayonism, his canvases reveal a restless search for new forms and artistic freedom. Together with Natalia Goncharova, his lifelong companion and collaborator, he created a revolutionary vision that shaped European modernism.

Born on June 3, 1881 in Tiraspol (then part of the Kherson Governorate of the Russian Empire, now Moldova/Ukraine region), Larionov studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under Valentin Serov and Konstantin Korovin. By the early 1900s he was already exhibiting in major avant-garde shows, becoming a leader of the radical art groups Jack of Diamonds, Donkey’s Tail, and Target. In 1914, he and Goncharova moved to Paris, where he became associated with Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, contributing innovative stage and costume designs.

Exiled in France, Larionov continued to paint, exhibit, and influence younger artists. His works today are preserved in the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum, the Centre Pompidou, the Tate, and important private collections. Regularly presented at international auction houses such as Sotheby’s and Christie’s, Larionov’s paintings are valued not only as masterworks of avant-garde art but also as milestones in the history of modernism.
