Georgii Yakutovych — Ukrainian Printmaker, Painter & Illustrator (People’s Artist of Ukraine)

Georgii (Heorhii) Yakutovych (1930, Kyiv – 2000, Kyiv) is one of the most influential Ukrainian graphic artists of the 20th century—a master of book illustration and fine-art printmaking. Educated at the Kyiv State Art Institute under renowned mentors Vasyl Kasiian and Ilarion Pleschynskyi, he earned international recognition for his deeply researched, visually striking illustrations to literary classics: Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors by Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky, The Tale of Igor’s Campaign, works by Lesia Ukrainka, Taras Shevchenko, Alexandre Dumas, and more. Yakutovych also created the visual concept art and designs for Sergei Parajanov’s landmark film “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors.” In 1991 he received the title People’s Artist of Ukraine.

Artistic profile

  • Style: A synthesis of Ukrainian folk imagery with modernist plasticity and a sculptural, high-contrast graphic language.

  • Media & techniques: Linocut, etching, and woodcut—distinguished by rhythmic line, powerful light–dark contrasts, and rigorously balanced compositions.

  • Themes: Ukrainian history and culture, literary archetypes, folk traditions, and portraits of contemporaries.

  • Merits: His prints are noted for symbolic depth, historical fidelity, and emotional intensity—works that read as both illustration and autonomous fine art.

Legacy & collections

Yakutovych set a benchmark for Ukrainian book graphics and printmaking in the 20th century. His works are held by the National Art Museum of Ukraine, as well as museums and private collections across Europe and the United States. For collectors, his editions and unique prints represent a pivotal chapter in Eastern European modern printmaking with strong cultural provenance.
