Petr Alexandrovich Nilus (1869–1943) is a world-famous Ukrainian painter and graphic artist whose works have been presented at leading international auctions and remain highly valued by collectors. His paintings are admired for their lyrical realism, refined sense of atmosphere, and ability to capture the beauty of everyday life with both intimacy and depth.

Nilus’s art is celebrated for its sincerity and poetic mood. His landscapes, portraits, and genre compositions reveal the quiet charm of Ukrainian and European settings, while his elegant technique and emotional sensitivity place him among the notable masters of early 20th-century painting. Alongside his canvases, his work as a writer and art critic enriched the cultural dialogue of his time.

Born on February 22, 1869 in Balta (now Odesa region), Nilus studied at the Odesa Drawing School, where he was deeply influenced by Kyriak Kostandi, and later continued his studies at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. From the 1890s he actively exhibited his works, becoming associated with the Society of South Russian Artists. After 1920, he emigrated to France, where he continued his artistic career, exhibiting in Paris and other European art centers.

Nilus’s works are preserved in the National Art Museum of Ukraine, the Odesa Art Museum, and important private collections in France, Germany, and beyond. Today, his paintings are regularly presented at international auction houses, where they remain in demand for their lyrical beauty, cultural significance, and refined artistic quality.
