About the artist: The son of a Petersburg bourgeois, he studied at the Academy of Arts under the guidance of Professor A. T. Markov and in 1858 received a small silver medal for drawing from life, and the next year - the same medal for the painting “Artist's Studio”, which was a success at the exhibition ; in 1860 he was given a large silver medal for the painting "Three Men from Krylov's Fable."

For a small gold medal, he painted the paintings: “Christians in the Village” and “Brides of the Bride,” but he received this medal only in 1862 for the painting: “The Matchmaking of an Official to the Tailor's Daughter” - the best of his works.

He, along with other competitors, refused to compete for the first gold medal (“riot of fourteen”) and, leaving the Academy with the title of a class artist, participated in the formation of the Artistic Artel and worked a lot on orders received by this artel.

Such are the images he performed in the Lutheran Church in Kronstadt, in the city of Ostrogozhsk, in the city of Oskol, in the city of Yekaterinodar, in the land of the Don Army, in for the church of Peter and Paul in the Engineering Academy, in the Kursk province, in the Caucasus and others, as well as portraits, mostly copies - of Emperor Nicholas I, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, Tsarevna Maria Feodorovna, engineer-colonel Shenyavsky, Minister of Public Education Count D. A. Tolstoy and work for Count Panin. Regardless of the artwork, in addition to the original lithographs in the “Russian Art Album of 1861”: “Three peasants, from Krylov’s fable” and “It’s not that he’s very drunk, but he’s endlessly cheerful”, performed by him even before leaving the Academy - he engraved two etchings: “Half-length portrait of the doorman at the artel’s premises, on Nevsky Prospect” and “The boy drawing on the wall of the house”.

In 1867, he was recognized as an academician for the paintings “The Peasant in Need” and “Fees for the Church”; then he painted more: “Two passers-by”, “Study of a dog” and “Peasant-mare”. In addition, he did a lot of drawing lessons.

In 1873, consumption began to develop in him. To improve his health, and at the same time to study foreign painting, he went to Italy. There he performed: “Roman Rural Scene”, “Musician”, “Curious about the Artist”, “The Old Man Offering Diamonds to a Young Girl”, “The Boy Getting the Grapes”, “The Inside of the Kitchen”, “Wide Nature” and other scenes from life and nature of Italy. But the Italian climate could not stop the fatal course of the disease, and on July 13, 1876 NP Petrov died [2].

He was buried in a non-Catholic cemetery in Testaccio (Italian: Cimitero acattolico per gli stranieri al Testaccio) for foreigners in Rome, where the artists Karl Bryullov, Pimen Orlov, Pavel and Alexander Svedomsky are buried [3].
