About the artist: Alexander Fedorovich (Alexander Gustav Adolf) Gaush - artist, philanthropist, teacher, professor.

The fate of the remarkable Russian artist of the "World of Art" circle A.F. Gausha is primarily associated with his hometown of St. Petersburg. But Odessa also became part of his creative biography, here he took part in the II Salon of V. Izdebsky (1911), in exhibitions of the Association of South Russian Artists (1904, 1905, 1907, 1909-1915) and the Art Society named after V.I. K.K. Kostandi (1925-1929), and from 1928 to 1938 he lived in our city and taught at the Polytechnic of Fine Arts (from 1930 - OKHI, from 1934 - OKHU).

Alexander Fedorovich Gaush was born on September 11 (August 30, O.S.) 1873 in St. Petersburg in the family of a hereditary Honorary Citizen, merchant of the 1st guild, Fedor Fedorovich Gaush. The Gaushas lived in their own house at 74, Angliyskaya Embankment.

In 1889, Alexander Gaush graduated from the Reformed School. From 1892 to 1893 he attended the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts. In 1893-1899. was a volunteer at the Higher Art School at the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he studied in the workshops of A.I. Kuindzhi and A.A. Kiseleva; at the same time he studied drawing with P.P. Chistyakov. In 1895 he lived in Paris, where he attended the Academy of R. Julien. In 1899 he received the title of artist (with the right to teach in educational institutions) for the landscapes "Towards the Evening" and "Wind".

Alexander Fedorovich also exhibited his works at the Spring Exhibitions in the halls of the Academy of Arts (1900-1902), exhibitions of the TYURKH, the Union of Russian Artists (1906-1907), the Leonardo da Vinci Society (1906), the Youth Union (1910), the World of Art (1911-1913, 1915-1918, 1922, since 1916 - a member of the association), Association of Independent (1916). He also took part in the exhibitions “Wreath” (1908), “Wreath-Stefanos” (1909), in the Salons of V.A. Izdebsky (I - Petersburg, Riga, 1910; II - Odessa, 1911).

The works of A.F. Gausha were presented at international exhibitions in Vienna (1908), Brussels (1910), Rome (1911), Venice (1914), the Baltic Exhibition in Malmo (1914).

Alexander Fedorovich traveled a lot. In 1894 he made a trip to Russia. Repeatedly visited Germany, France, Italy, Austria; visited Spain (1906) and England (1911-1912).

In 1904 A.F. Gaush together with N.F. Root has prepared a textbook “Drawings by Russian Artists”.

In 1907, the Museum of Old Petersburg (now the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg) was created in St. Petersburg under the Society of Architects and Artists. The museum was created by connoisseurs and connoisseurs of St. Petersburg history and architecture. A.F. Gausch was among them. Occupying the position of chief curator, he presented valuable gifts to the museum for many years; at his own expense, he invited photographers to capture the wooden buildings that were to be demolished (thanks to this, the museum has preserved beautiful photographs of the buildings of old Petersburg that have long been defunct).

In 1916, at the N.E. A personal exhibition of Alexander Fedorovich Gaush was held by prey. By this time, the artist had created works that brought him fame: "Outside the city" (1900), "The Grand Palace in Tsarskoe Selo" (1902), "Novgorod" (1904), "Fresh Day" (1905), "Pavlovsky Park" (1905), “In the South” (1911), “Spring” (1911), “Sunrise” (1914), “Autumn in the Mountains” (1915).
