Alexey Alekseevich Shovkunenko (1884–1974) is a world-famous Ukrainian painter and teacher whose works are regularly featured at leading international auctions and admired by collectors for their lyrical realism, portraiture, landscapes, and delicate still lifes.

Shovkunenko’s art is distinguished by strong academic foundations, refined draftsmanship, mastery of light and atmosphere, and a capacity for both intimate portrait and sweeping landscape. His works frequently explore industrial themes, river and rural scenes, portraits of cultural figures, and natural motifs, always balancing emotional depth with decorative elegance.

Born on March 21, 1884, in Kherson, he received his early training in an icon-painting workshop, then studied at the Odessa Art School (known also as the Grekov Odessa Art School), graduating in 1908, and later at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts, completing his studies in 1917. From early in his career he was active in exhibitions: he exhibited with the Society of South Russian Artists, later with the Kostandi Society, among others.

As a teacher, he had a long career: teaching in Odessa Art Polytechnic, then Odessa Art Institute, and from 1936 to 1963 at the Kyiv State Art Institute, where he trained generations of Ukrainian artists. He was awarded the title People’s Artist of the USSR, became a full member of the USSR Academy of Arts, and won the Shevchenko National Prize.

Shovkunenko passed away on March 12, 1974, in Kyiv. His works remain preserved in leading Ukrainian museums and private collections. Regularly appearing at international auction houses, his paintings are sought after for their artistry, cultural significance, and timeless beauty.
