The oil painting "City in the shadows" is an energetic composition that combines vibrant colors and bold textures to portray the dynamic interplay of light and shadow in an urban landscape. The artist employs a robust impasto technique, with the paint applied in thick, expressive strokes that give the work a sense of depth and movement. At the heart of the scene lies a quaint town square, suggested by the pastel-hued facades of buildings and the cobblestone-like textures of the ground. The buildings are painted with a palette of creamy whites, soft yellows, and muted oranges, reflecting the warmth of the architecture commonly found in historic city centers. Overarching the square are trees and branches depicted in sweeping strokes of brown, orange, and hints of green, casting their shadows onto the buildings and street below. These shadows are rendered in contrasting cool tones of blues and purples, creating a visual representation of shade that adds a refreshing coolness to the scene. The sky above is an abstract expression of time and weather, where blues, purples, and whites are energetically mixed, suggesting a sky in motion—perhaps the fleeting moments of early morning or the gathering momentum of an afternoon breeze. In the foreground, bold splashes of color and dark silhouettes of figures add a sense of life and activity, implying the presence of people moving through the square, living out their daily lives within the embrace of the city. "City in the shadows" is more than a depiction of a location; it's a canvas alive with the pulse of urban existence, the constant flux of light, and the vibrant energy of city life. The painting is a visual symphony that celebrates the juxtaposition of permanence and change in the urban environment.
