Ilya Efimovich Repin (1844–1930) is a world-famous Ukrainian-born painter whose works have been presented at leading international auctions and remain among the most highly prized in European art. He is celebrated as one of the greatest masters of realism, whose monumental canvases and portraits shaped the visual culture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Repin’s paintings are admired for their psychological depth, dramatic composition, and truthful reflection of human life. His masterpieces — Barge Haulers on the Volga (1870–1873), Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks (1880–1891), and They Did Not Expect Him (1884–1888) — embody a synthesis of historical scope and personal drama. Equally renowned are his portraits of leading cultural and political figures of his time, where Repin captured not only likeness but also the inner world of his sitters.

Born on July 24, 1844, in Chuhuiv, Kharkiv region, Repin began his training at the local art school and later studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg (1863–1871). His talent quickly brought him recognition, including the prestigious Academy Gold Medal and a scholarship to study in Paris and Italy. Returning to Russia, he became the leading figure of the Peredvizhniki (Itinerants) movement, committed to bringing art closer to the people.

Repin lived his later years at his estate Penaty in Kuokkala (then Finland), where he continued to paint and receive visitors until his death on September 29, 1930. Today, his works are preserved in the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum, the National Art Museum of Ukraine, and major collections worldwide. Regularly presented at international auction houses, Repin’s paintings remain in demand for their artistic brilliance, cultural significance, and timeless emotional resonance.
