About the artist: Born in the family of the driver at the station Panyutino, now Lozovsky district in the Kharkov region. Even in childhood, his drawing abilities, observation, a subtle sense of nature were manifested. He received his primary art education at the art school in Lozovaya. In 1932 he entered the Kharkov Art Institute, and in 1934 he transferred to the Kiev Art Institute, where he continued his studies in the studio of an outstanding painter, in the class of F. Krichevsky. Member of the Finnish and World War II.

During the years of World War II he served in the ranks of the Soviet Army on the Karelian front. He was the chief artist of the front, worked in a front-line newspaper. His frontline sketches are filled with great love for a soldier in a gray overcoat who endured suffering, the pain of war and recognized the joy of Victory.

Demobilized from the army, the artist devoted himself to creativity. He works hard and enthusiastically, takes part in almost every republican exhibition, and teaches at the Kiev Art Institute.

In 1946 he married the artist G. D. Zorya. In 1947 their daughter Olga was born, and in 1950 their daughter Oksana. Both became prominent representatives of modern art in Ukraine. After the war he lived in Kiev. Honored Artist of the USSR since 1973.

The author of many thematic paintings, a soulful landscape painter, whose works clearly showed the main features of Soviet fine art - patriotism, humanism, love for nature, sincerity in its reflection.

Peter Slyota is an artist of a wide creative range. He is the author of many thematic paintings ("A meeting in liberated Kiev", 1947; "V.I. Lenin in the Kremlin", 1968; "The First Spring", 1964-1965, etc.). The painter’s creative heritage contains many works dedicated to memorable historical places connected with the heroic past of the Ukrainian people (Chigirin, 1953; Three Wells of the Times of Bogdan Khmelnitsky, 1953; Subbotov, 1953; Tarasova Gora in Kanev, 1949, and etc.).

The artist’s giftedness and originality were revealed primarily in the works of the landscape cycle, which radiate a joyful perception of reality, attract with directness in the recreation of the magical world of nature, with deep humanity. It was in the landscapes that his talent of lyricist and colorist was most fully manifested. Spring images of nature are striking in diversity, they are characterized by lyrical emotion, soulful soulfulness. The artist perceives life in his own way, sincerely and in love, and even in everyday motives (“Autumn”, 1959; “Winter”, 1955; “Okolitsa”, 1970; “Beginning of Autumn”, 1970) his colors radiate optimism, attract with clarity and simplicity, a subtle understanding of nature.

Already in the landscapes of an early period, he strives to create a generalized, epic image of nature. And in this regard, his best works of the 1960-1970s accurately recreate reality (Blossom, 1969; Moscow, 1973; Summer Song, 1973; Spring in Crimea, 1971; Kiev State University named after T. G. Shevchenko ", 1970;" Kiev. Park named after T. G. Shevchenko ", 1970).

In a series of landscape works dedicated to Bulgaria, Sweden, France, Italy, Turkey, Czechoslovakia (“Street in Kosice”, 1963; “Charles Bridge”, 1963; “Paris June 12”, 1956; “Morning in Istanbul”, 1956; “ Paris. Notre Dame ", 1971, etc.), where the artist once visited, he shows an extraordinary talent in revealing the most characteristic of both national and social signs. Each product of this cycle is not repeated either in color or in composition.

The works of Peter Slyota took a worthy place in the history of Ukrainian fine art, the best of them are preserved in many museums in Ukraine, Russia and private collections. Joyful and bright, full of poetry, they create a convincing image of our flourishing land, bring the warmth and sincerity of the artist’s heart.

The artistic dynasty continues in the grandchildren. Oksana’s daughters Meetings: Oksana Popinova and Galina Popinova - both followed in the footsteps of their parents (their father is poster artist Nikolai Popinov). Today they are famous and talented artists of Ukraine.
