Nikolay Stepanovich Barsamov (1892–1976) is a renowned Ukrainian/Soviet painter, graphic artist, and art historian whose works have been presented at leading international auctions and remain highly valued by collectors. Celebrated for lyrical still lifes, atmospheric seascapes, and finely observed genre scenes, he combined classical draughtsmanship with a refined sense of color and mood.

Barsamov’s paintings are admired for their compositional clarity and quiet poetic resonance. Alongside his studio practice, he played a pivotal role in museum work and scholarship on Ivan Aivazovsky, helping preserve and interpret the legacy of the great marine painter—an achievement that adds historical weight to his artistic oeuvre.

Born on November 16, 1892 (O.S. November 4) in Tiflis (now Tbilisi), Barsamov graduated from the Rostov Drawing School in 1913, studied in Ilya Mashkov’s private studio in Moscow, and continued at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1913–1917) under Abram Arkhipov, Nikolai Kasatkin, and Konstantin Korovin. In the early 1920s he moved to Crimea, where from 1923 he served as director of the Feodosia Picture Gallery (Aivazovsky Gallery) and later as its long-time academic consultant. During World War II he organized the evacuation of the gallery’s masterpieces, safeguarding the collection. In 1969 he was awarded the title Honored Worker of Arts of the Ukrainian SSR. He died on March 10, 1976 in Feodosia.

Barsamov’s works are held in museum collections in Crimea and across Ukraine, as well as in private collections in Europe and North America. Regularly presented at international auction houses, his paintings remain sought after for their artistic refinement, cultural significance, and the unique historical context of his museum and scholarly activity.
