Sergey Alekseevich Grigoriev (1910–1988) is a world-renowned Ukrainian painter whose works have been presented at leading international auctions and continue to attract collectors for their powerful genre scenes, realism enriched with lyrical depth, and strong sense of social and psychological meaning. He is celebrated as one of the leading figures of Soviet-Ukrainian painting, a master who balanced ideological themes with artistic vision.

Grigoriev’s art is distinguished by its harmonious compositions, dynamic narratives, and emotional authenticity. His paintings include major multi-figure works, portraits, landscapes and scenes of everyday and youth life, often with dramatic or psychological undertones. He was particularly known for works such as Admission into the Komsomol (1949), Discussion of a Low Mark, The Goalkeeper (1949), The Return, and numerous portraits that reveal human dignity within social contexts.

Born on June 22 (old style) / July 5 (new style), 1910 in Lugansk, Grigoriev showed early aptitude for art. He studied at the Zaporozhye Art Vocational School (1923-1926), spent time at VKHUTEMAS in Moscow (1926–1927), and then attended the Kyiv Art Institute, graduating in 1932. After finishing his studies, he worked in Kharkov at the Mistetstvo publishing house, making posters and illustrations, and then moved to Kiev, where he began teaching at the Kiev Art Institute. He served in the Red Army during World War II, returning to teaching and creating major works afterward.

Grigoriev’s achievements were officially recognized: he was awarded two Stalin Prizes, earned the titles Honored Artist of the Ukrainian SSR, People’s Artist of the Ukrainian SSR, and later People’s Artist of the USSR. He became a full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR. He passed away on April 9, 1988 in Kyiv, leaving a legacy of works preserved in major Ukrainian museums and many private collections globally.
