Adalbert Mikhailovich Erdeli (1891-1955) is a world-famous Hungarian-Ukrainian painter, pedagogue, and cultural activist whose works have been presented at leading international auctions and are highly valued by collectors. He is one of the principal founders of the Transcarpathian art school, recognized for combining European modernist influences with lyrical realism and a deep sense of place.

Erdeli’s art is distinguished by expressive portraits, radiant still lifes, vibrant landscapes, and a masterful play of light and color. His style absorbed elements from French painting and Cézanne, Fauvist color harmonies, and outdoor plein air technique, yet remained deeply rooted in the Carpathian terrain. His works evoke dynamism, emotional texture, and visual harmony, making them highly sought by museums and private collection alike.

Born on May 25, 1891 in Kelemenfalva (today Zahattia, Ukraine), Erdeli studied at the Budapest Academy of Arts from 1911 to 1915. He traveled and improved his craft in Munich (1922-1926) and later in Paris (1929-1931). In 1927, together with József Boksay, he founded the Uzhhorod School of Drawing, and in 1931 co-founded the Society (or Association) of Artists of Subcarpathian Rus. After World War II, he served as a leading teacher at the Uzhhorod College of Applied Arts and contributed to the formation of the Transcarpathian branch of the Union of Artists of Ukraine.

Throughout his life, Erdeli exhibited widely: in Munich’s Glaspalast, in Paris on the Champs-Élysées, in Brussels, Prague, Brno, Bratislava, Budapest, and in major Ukrainian centers. He died on September 19, 1955 in Uzhhorod.

His works are preserved in the Transcarpathian Academy of Arts, regional art museums in Ukraine, and in private collections across Europe. Regularly presented at international auction houses, Erdeli’s paintings remain in demand for their artistic innovation, cultural resonance, and enduring beauty.
