About the artist: Outstanding Ukrainian landscape painter, graphic artist, master of interior compositions.
Pyotr Alekseevich Levchenko was born on June 29, 1856 into a merchant family, his father was the owner of a rope factory.
The future artist was fond of drawing while studying at the Kharkov city gymnasium under the direction of the artist and teacher Dmitry Bezperchy, later he was engaged in the studio of Yegor Shreider. At an exhibition of student works in 1873 in St. Petersburg he was awarded a silver medal.
In 1878, he went to study in St. Petersburg, which greatly upset his father, who saw in his eldest son the successor of the family trade business. From 1878 to 1883 he was a free listener of the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he studied with M. Klodt, P. Chistyakov, V. Orlovsky.
A trip to Paris in 1895 and an acquaintance with the works of the French Impressionists greatly influenced all the further work of the artist.
P.A. Levchenko lived mainly in Kharkov, taught at the Kharkov city school of drawing and painting. He was one of the founders and a permanent member of the Kharkov Art Association, an exhibitor of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions. From 1886 to 1904, he was a participant in almost all art traveling exhibitions of the Association of South Russian Artists, the Association of Kiev Artists.
Levchenko's work amazes with deep sincerity and lyricism. As a landscape painter, the artist was extremely attentive to the unique subtleties of Ukrainian nature, its atmospheric phenomena. It is this that becomes decisive in the search for the appropriate compositional, color and tonal solution of his paintings: light, translucent paints, through which the texture of the canvas often peeps through, convey the feeling of morning coolness, early haze, bright colors of midday, a variety of greenery or ocher-gray paints of wet and fresh air.
In addition to landscapes, Levchenko's special hobby was interior compositions. In Ukraine, he was one of the outstanding masters of this genre. In the works of this trend, the artist depicts the cozy corners of the house, its furnishings, the life of the owners of the house.
The creative manner of many works of the last period of the artist's life is close to the style of Art Nouveau. The textured surface of the paintings of this time becomes matte, with a restrained color scheme, devoid of external sheen.
Pyotr Levchenko made a huge contribution to the development of Ukrainian fine art, combining realism and sensual impressionism in his works.
But during his lifetime, creativity did not bring the artist either glory or wealth. He died in poverty in 1917. Only after his death in 1919, an exhibition of the master's works was organized, where more than 700 canvases were presented, which revealed the amazing poetry of the sensual and subtle nature of the artist, a wonderful person-creator.
Now the paintings of Petr Alekseevich Levchenko are kept in the National Museum of Ukrainian Fine Arts in Kiev, the Kharkov Art Museum, in private collections of connoisseurs of painting from many countries.
