About the artists: Leonid Ilyich Chychkan was born on August 2, 1911 in the city of Katerynodar (now Krasnodar) in Russia. In 1933, he graduated from the Krasnodar Art Technical School. From 1933 to 1941, he studied at the Kharkiv Art Institute under S. M. Prokhorov and M. A. Kozik. Participant of the Second World War. In 1945, he graduated from the Kyiv Art Institute, and in 1952 he began teaching there.
Since 1971, he has been a professor at the Kyiv Art Institute.

He worked in the field of easel painting. Landscape, still life and portrait are the genres in which Chichkan's talent was most fully and multifaceted. It is in them that the artist achieves artistry. He has his favorite themes and motifs, to which he repeatedly returns, telling again and again about something new, focusing on the subtle nuances of emotions, the general color range.

In his landscapes, he is always faithful to the romantic beauty of the Carpathians, which he sings throughout his work. And in the poeticization of this region, Chychkan is creatively original, because he never resorts to excessive pathos and external decorativeism. His Carpathians are the land of workers, not a place with exotic tourist routes. This is what determines the choice of specifically everyday motifs, which are associated in our imagination not with the legends of the mountains, but with the everyday life of contemporaries. Not the cloudless height of blue peaks shining in the rays of the sun, but the promised land always remains in the circle of interests of the painter. This determines the characteristic color of his paintings, in which deep, saturated green-blue tones prevail in combination with bright spots of a warm gamut, and constancy in the choice of static compositions mainly with human figures. In the Chichka landscapes, there is a folk perception of the surrounding reality. But this feature is even more vividly revealed in his still lifes, in which elements of folk life and art, as if snatched from life, are acutely felt.

Chichkan's artistic gift found expression in a number of thematic canvases. Some of them are related to the historical past of the Carpathians - the land of romantic legends ("Olexa Dovbush"), others are dedicated to the images of our contemporaries ("Lumberjacks").
