About the artist: One of the founders of hyperrealism in the USSR, organizer and participant of the first exhibitions of hyperrealist artists. Lives and works in Moscow.
Born in Kiev in a family of artists. After graduating from the Republican secondary art school, he studied at the faculty of monumental art of the Kiev State Art Institute (now the Kiev Academy of Fine Arts).
In 1971, in his first year at the institute, Sergey painted his first painting in the style of hyperrealism - Tara.
After graduation, Sergei Bazilev taught for a long time at his native institute, interrupting only for the duration of the one-year internship at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts.
In 1980, Sergey Bazilev became a member of the Six group (Sergey Bazilev, Alexei Tegin, Sergey Sherstyuk, Sergey Geta, Igor Kopytyansky, Nikolay Filatov), and participated in her projects until the group collapsed in 1987.
In 1984, Sergei Bazilev moved to Moscow. For several years he lived and worked in the apartment of his close friend Sergei Sherstyuk, until he received housing and his own workshop.
In the mid-80s, another important event took place in the fate of the artist, he met the world famous film director Andrei Tarkovsky. Andrey Tarkovsky invited the young artist to participate in his projects. Hopes for cooperation, alas, were not destined to come true. The death of Andrei Tarkovsky prevented. During the communication between the director and the artist, Bazilev wrote a work dedicated to his great contemporary (“Portrait of Andrei Tarkovsky”). The painting received a Gold Medal at the International Exhibition "Portrait of a Contemporary".
In 1985, the American magazine “Art in America” in its November issue singled out S. Bazilev’s paintings “New Year” and “Farewell to Kiev” (the latter was named the best work) from the works of hyperrealists from different countries.
Sergey Bazilev is a participant in more than 50 group and more than 10 personal exhibitions in Russia and abroad.
