About the artist: An outstanding Soviet Ukrainian painter, one of the most prominent masters of the thematic painting of enduring significance. Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1984). Professor. Corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the Ukrainian SSR. Khmelnitsky Alexander Anatolyevich was born on August 2, 1924 in Kharkov. Participated in hostilities during the Great Patriotic War. He received professional training at the Kharkov Art College and Art Institute (graduated in 1953), where until 1998 he worked as a teacher at the Department of easel and monumental painting. The artist's works are marked by thematic and genre diversity. Khmelnitsky reflected the epoch-making events of Ukrainian history; a significant number of paintings and graphic sheets are dedicated to the days of the past war, where personal impressions and feelings of the front-line artist found their place. The artist's appeal to the life of his contemporaries was very fruitful and interesting. A deep sense of the beauty of the surrounding world inspired the artist in his mature years to lyrical works. The master became a real singer of eternal femininity, which was reflected in a series of magnificent paintings in the nude genre. Khmelnytsky is also notable for the fact that he worked with equal success in the field of easel painting and graphics, masterfully mastering various techniques, and in the field of monumental and decorative art. Each of Khmelnytsky's paintings, thanks to their high professional development, has become a great asset of Ukrainian artistic culture. From 1947 to 1953 he studied at the Kharkov State Art Institute with A. Lyubimsky, M. Rybalchenko, P. Kotov, L. Chernov, M. Shaposhnikov. After graduation, Khmelnitsky A.A. taught at Kharkiv Art Institute, which in 1963 was renamed the Kharkov Institute of Art and Industry. In 1956 he was accepted as a member of the Kharkov organization of the Union of Artists of Ukraine, where in 1972-1976 and in 1981-1998 he was the chairman of the painting section. Since 1951 Khmelnitsky A.A. - a permanent participant of republican, all-Union and foreign art exhibitions. In 1967, Khmelnitsky A. A. was awarded the Silver Medal of the USSR Academy of Arts for the painting “In the Name of Life”. In 1968 he became the owner of the Silver Medal named after M.B. Grekov. In 1974, he participated in the creation of the diorama "Forcing the Dnieper" in collaboration with A. Konstantinopolsky, V. Mokrozhitsky, V. Parchevsky for the Museum of the Great Patriotic War in Kyiv. Personal exhibitions of the artist were held in Kharkov in 1989, 1995, 1998, in Simferopol in 1997. Since 1978 he has been a professor at the Kharkov Institute of Art and Industry. Khmelnitsky Alexander Anatolyevich in 1984 received the title of People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR. He has been a corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of Ukraine since 1997.
The artist's works are in museums, galleries, private collections in Ukraine and abroad. The artist died on June 5, 1998 in Kharkov.
