About the artists: Erno Ayzig (Isak) Erb (1878–1943) is a famous artist of Lviv, who was born in its suburb - Znesinny. Back in the days of the Austrian Empire, which included Lviv, E. Erb graduated from the decorative painting department of the Imperial-Royal State Industrial School (1898).
His teachers were artists of the Viennese school of painting Tadeusz Rybkowski and Edward Miron Pitch, who instilled in their pupil the ideas of academicism and historicism in art. Art education gave Erno the opportunity to experiment in the perspective of modernist art.
After graduating from Lviv, Erb, from 1899, studied decorative painting and worked in theater workshops in Vienna. Returning to Lviv, he paints pictures, costumes and decorations for the theater, paints synagogues. Creates cityscapes of Lviv.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the artist was in search of his own style of writing. Bright colors and a broad painterly stroke become the defining features of his impressionist paintings.
In the 1910s and 1920s, he worked as a theater decorator in Lviv. From 1919 - the owner of a studio, at the same time he began to exhibit at art exhibitions in Lviv and Lutsk, Poland (Warsaw, Poznan, Lublin), Buffalo (USA). In 1920, he exhibited his works at an exhibition organized by the Society of Supporters of Jewish Art (Krakow). In 1926, the first personal exhibition of the artist took place.
He worked in the spirit of post-impressionism with a focus on the work of the leading master in this field, the Berliner Max Lieberman, according to his ideology, he was close to the idea of reproducing a perfect world in art. In Erno Erb's urban landscapes, one feels a tender love for Lviv, its architectural monuments and its inhabitants. The talent of a colorist, a master of compositional solutions of color and light was revealed in the ability to harmoniously combine shades of blue, blue and grayish-olive with steel, to combine cold and warm gamuts. In his canvases, a multi-faceted image of multi-ethnic Lviv with bazaars, small traders, and artisans appears. But over time, especially in the 1930s, expressive notes appear in the works of E. Erb, the texture of the painting changes, the artist experiments with color. Erno Erb does not stop working even in the conditions of the occupation of Lviv. The Germans liked his paintings and bought them for nothing. Thanks to this, the legacy of the Jewish artist was preserved and today his canvases are sold at auctions around the world. In his works, the artist created an artistic image of the decades preceding the Second World War. He died from the German system, which physically destroyed the artist in the Yaniv concentration camp in July 1943.
Currently, the artist's paintings are stored in the Lviv National Art Gallery, the National Museum in Lviv, the National Museum in Krakow, the Historical Museum in Krakow, other museums in Poland and Israel, private collections in Ukraine, Israel, Germany, Great Britain, and the United States.
