About the artist: Soviet Ukrainian painter. Member of the Union of Artists of the Ukrainian SSR. Vladimir Les was born on May 10, 1927 in the village of Andreykovtsy, Khmelnytsky region. During his school years he became interested in drawing, but the Second World War began. At the age of 17, Vladimir signed up as a volunteer in the navy (he was called up for military service in 1944 from the age of 18). He served on the cruiser Molotov of the Black Sea Fleet. For military services he was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the II degree and many medals. During his conscript service, the sailor Vladimir Lesyu smiled artistic fate: the famous Russian artist Peter Maltsev painted a picture about the heroism of the sailors of the cruiser "Molotov" Needed an assistant who had artistic ability. He invited Vladimir Lesy to sketch types among his colleagues for the picture. Assessing the outstanding abilities of the guy, he offered to enter the Moscow National University named after N. Krupskaya. Gave a professional recommendation. After a successful two-year correspondence course at the university in 1951, having demobilized, Vladimir Les entered the M. Grekov Odessa Art School, which he successfully completed. The diploma work of Vladimir Stepanovich "For exemplary service" (maritime theme), the state commission recognized the best and recommended the picture for the republican exhibition (Kiev-1957). For some time he worked at an art-production plant in Vinnitsa. In 1976 he finally settled in the city of Khmelnitsky. In 1978 he joined the Union of Artists of Ukraine. In 1976-1985, together with artists Alexander Kiselev and Leonid Bessarab, he created five dioramas in Shepetovka, Ostropol, Starokonstantinov, Khmelnytsky, Letava, dedicated to the liberation of Khmelnitsky from the Nazi invaders. It was with these large-scale canvases that Vladimir Les established himself as a battle painter with deep monumental thinking and an original style of fine writing. These grandiose canvases still amaze viewers with the scale of artistic compositions and stylistic features - an extensive, bold brushstroke, richness of colors, colorful images, contrasting chiaroscuro, the capacity of generalizations and intense dynamics of the battle ... This is also observed in some of Vladimir Les' canvases, in particular: you tyrants! "," In a Terrible Hour "," Farewell of a Slav "," Downed German Ace "and others. Psychologically, the moods of warriors and ordinary people, warmed by great grief, are subtly conveyed. His picture "Chronicle" is especially striking in its "documentary" and dynamic tension: the mother on the screen recognizes her son, marching with her company to the front. By the way, a photographic illustration of this picture was repeatedly replicated in periodicals, calendars of the post-war period. The theme of war and post-war labor heroism Ukrainian, in particular Podolyan, became the leading one in the artist's work. It runs like a red thread through almost all of his canvases: "From line to line" (demobilization and work on new buildings in the country), "Our regiment has arrived" (a newborn son in an officer's family), "Police captain M. Lukashchuk", "Police Colonel B . nowhere ”,“ Fraser G. Nikevich ”,“ Electrician Roman ”and others. A separate theme of the artist was the coverage of the heroism of the Podolyans during the years of the so-called civil war (based on the work of Nikolai Ostrovsky). Many canvases by V. Les are dedicated to the heroic struggle of the Podolyans against the colonialist policy of Poland during the Hetmanate: "At the site of the Pilyavets battle", "Local historians" (near the mantelpiece with an engraved portrait of Colonel Ivan Ganzha, an associate of Bogdan Khmelnitsky, who died in Podolia). In the work of Vladimir Les - about 250 canvases, 13 personal and more than 60 collective exhibitions. Laureate of the Regional Prize named after V. Rozvadovsky (2002) and the City Prize named after B. Khmelnitsky. He died on July 12, 2007. In the native village of Vladimir Les, at the local school, a museum room was opened, dedicated to the life and creative path of the artist.
