About the artist: From 1911 to 1914 he studied at the Odessa Art School with teachers K. Kostandi and G. Ladyzhensky. In 1926 he graduated from the Odessa Art Institute, where he worked as a teacher for many years. [1]

Among his pupils: O. Atsmanchuk, V. Vlasov, K. Lomykin, A. Soroka, S. Ryabchenko, K. Filatov, V. Khorenko.

Impressions of the war and the revolution, numerous stories of participants in the events of 1905, the heroism of Russian sailors left a deep mark in the soul of the artist. One of the main themes of his work was the revolutionary events in the Black Sea. A singer of courage of Soviet sailors, he creates a number of paintings dedicated to the years of the Great Patriotic War.

In 1919, LO Muchnyk joined the Red Army and took part in the battles against the White Poles and Petliurists. After the end of the Civil War, he returned to Odessa and continued his studies at the newly established Art Institute with the famous artist Pavel Gavrilovich Volokidin.

Already in his student years, Muchnik took part in exhibitions of the KK Kostandi Society. In 1934, at the VI All-Ukrainian Exhibition in Kyiv, his painting "Supply of provisions to the battleship Potemkin in 1905." was shown. An uncontrollable desire to help the insurgents of Potemkin, and the spectator is acutely aware of the shadow of the Odessa proletariat in the first months of the 1905 revolution.

Three years later, a second painting by O. Muchnik appeared, devoted to the same exciting theme of the revolution, The Uprising on the Cruiser Ochakov (1937). Central to the work is the romantic image of the leader of the uprising, Lieutenant Schmidt.

From 1949 to 1957 LO Muchnyk worked on the monumental canvas "Insurgent Potemkin carried Valinchuk's body ashore."

The two summers he spent in the Crimea (1950 and 1955) were especially fruitful for the artist's work. The bright, original nature of the south completely captivated the artist and was reflected in many sunny, colorfully rich landscapes and paintings: "Pushkin's Rock", "View of Ai-Petri", "Ai-Dalarn" and. etc.

In 1963 his personal exhibition took place in Odessa [2].

He painted landscapes, urban views and multi-figure compositions - mostly reproducing the events of the Black Sea Fleet.

In the postwar years, the artist continued to work fruitfully, focusing primarily on marine studies. This is how his work “Odessa. Military Harbor "(1952). According to Igor Sharov, it is painted in bright colors, full of light and major mood, well composed compositionally, this small picture immediately evokes a feeling of joy. Attempts to show the joy and happiness of the people of post-war Odessa, to move away from the tragedy of the construction of images, any minority is a characteristic feature of the artist's work in the 50s of the twentieth century. Note only that, in contrast to the classic works of marine painters, who depict the water and the coastline in different states, in the works of the Martyr is an essential detail the presence of military equipment.

His works are stored in the National Art Museum of Ukraine, Odessa and Kharkiv Art Museums.
