About the artist: Born October 15 (27), 1886 in Moscow, in the family of lawyer and chess player Rafail Alexandrovich Falk (1856-1913) and his wife Maria Borisovna Falk (nee?, 1866-1940).

From 1904 to 1905 he studied fine art at the school-studio of K. F. Yuon and I. O. Dudin, in the private studio of I. I. Mashkov, and then from 1905 to 1909 - at the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where V. A. Serov and K. A. Korovin had a special influence on him. He lived mainly in Moscow. In 1909, in order to marry Elizabeth Potekhina, Falk was baptized with the name Roman (after the revolution he returned to his former name) [1].

In 1910 he became one of the founders of the art association “Jack of Diamonds”, in the activity of which he participated from 1910 to 1916. From 1910 to 1911 he made a trip to Italy.

After the revolution of 1917, from 1918 to 1928 he taught at the State Agricultural Art School - Vhutemas - Vkhutein (now the Moscow State Art Institute named after Surikov); was dean of the faculty of painting; his students were S. A. Chuikov, M. P. Ivanov-Radkevich, G. G. Nissky, E. P. Levina-Rosengolts, R. V. Idelson, N. M. Romadin, V. N. Ostroumov, P I. Falbov.

From 1918 to 1921 he worked at the Moscow College of Arts and the Art Industry of the Department of Fine Arts of the People's Commissariat of Education. Periodically since 1921 he taught at the Vitebsk Art College. In 1921 he became a member of the Kultur League association, created to develop Jewish art associated with traditional Yiddish culture. The artist’s workshop was in VKHUTEMASovsky (Myasnitskaya St., 21 sq. 36).

In 1928, the artist went on a business trip abroad and until 1937 he lived and worked in Paris. Then he returned to the USSR, lived in the so-called House of Pertsova, where at the request of former colleagues on the Jack of Diamonds A.V. Kuprin and V.V. Rozhdestvensky and with the active assistance of the pilot A. B. Yumashev, he received a workshop that was previously occupied by the artist P. P. Sokolov-Skalya. Falk met Yumashev in 1936 at the USSR Embassy in France, they became friends. In 1937-1938, they made a kind of “tour” in the Crimea and Central Asia, where the famous pilot lectured about his flight through the North Pole, and in his spare time set his amateur easel next to Falk’s easel. He worked as a stage designer for the Moscow State Jewish Theater (with which he collaborated before his departure abroad), as well as Jewish theaters in other cities.

In 1939, a personal exhibition of the artist took place in the House of Writers. His work is dominated by landscapes, still lifes and portraits, painted in a generalized, muffled manner.

During the Great Patriotic War from 1941 to 1943, the artist was evacuated to Bashkiria and Central Asia (Samarkand).

During the development campaigns of the 1940s. criticized as a "formalist".

After 1953, Falk became for many young Soviet avant-garde artists a kind of symbol of the great era of painting that had passed, a bridge between the great art of the beginning of the 20th century and the post-Stalin thaw.

He died in Moscow on October 1, 1958. He was buried at Kalitnikovsky cemetery, plot number 20.
