About the artist: Yuri Ivanovich Khimich was born on April 12, 1928 in Kamenets-Podolsk [1] (USSR, now Ukraine). His father was a chemical engineer at a sugar factory, his mother was a teacher.

From an early age, Yura wrote poetry, played musical instruments, and painted. In 1945 he graduated from high school (with a gold medal [source?]). The family was given a room in a communal apartment where 15 more families lived (with one kitchen for all) [source?].

In 1945, when Yuri Khimich was 17 years old, he showed a series of his watercolors to the famous Soviet artist, academician Alexei Shovkunenko and, on his advice, entered the architectural faculty of the Kiev Construction Institute. During his studies at the institute (1945-1950) he studied with the architect I. Karakis [1], quartzist Mikhail Shteinberg. According to Irma Karakis: “During the years of study at the institute V. Skugarev and Y. Khimich stood out among the students of that time.” [2] This - early - period of Yuri Khimich's work includes a series of watercolors: Kiev, Leningrad, Crimean landscapes of small formats and still lifes.

1950-1954 - Service in the Soviet Army (Sevastopol), where Lieutenant Engineer Yuri Khimich was sent to build the main base of the Black Sea Fleet. In his spare time, Khimich painted seascapes and portraits. In 1952, these works were exhibited at his first personal exhibition and received positive reviews from famous Soviet artists of that time - Tatyana Yablonskaya and Mikhail Deregus. The works of Khimich also made a great impression on the president of the Academy of Architecture of the Ukrainian SSR, Vladimir Zabolotny, who offered the young artist a job at the Academy.

1954-1955 - junior researcher at the Academy of Architecture of the Ukrainian SSR.

1955-1959 - post-graduate student of the Academy of Architecture of the Ukrainian SSR, where he worked on the topic "Decorative and artistic means in the interior of public buildings." (Teachers - I. Karakis, O. Shovkunenko, S. Yerzhikovsky, V. Zabolotny, J. Steinberg)

1957-1964 - Senior Artist of the Department of the History of Ukrainian Art of the Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the Ukrainian SSR.

Having entered the Academy, Khimich is engaged in depicting the interiors of historical buildings, makes copies of monumental paintings (it is characteristic, however, that, according to G. Logvin, with all the technical perfection of Khimich's "copies" were always conditional, being artistic interpretations). Among the heritage of these years are hundreds of sheets with images of Kiev, Chernigov, Lvov and other cities of Ukraine.

Travels across Russia, the Baltics, Belarus, the Caucasus. During these years, several personal exhibitions of the artist took place, among which one should especially note the exhibition of watercolors in the Central House of Architects in Moscow (1957). Reaching the heights of skill in watercolor technique in 1957-1958. (when experts began to consider him one of the best watercolors of the USSR), Khimich, unexpectedly for many, drastically changed his creative style and turned to gouache. He travels across the expanses of the Soviet Union together with the famous painter Sergei Otroshchenko, whose influence is noticeable in the early gouache of this period. Creates a series of works in Russia, Bakhchisarai, Ukraine, many of which are reproduced in periodicals, books on the history of architecture, postcards (as Y. Khimich himself notes in his autobiography, as of June 1968, “about 400 works have been published in separate collections, in books, in magazines ”[source?]).

In 1964-1985. Y. Khimich teaches at the Kiev Civil Engineering Institute, where he holds the position of acting. about. associate professor (since 1971 - associate professor), and later and. about. Professor of the Department of Drawing and Painting.

Since 1984 - a lecturer (and since 1991 - a professor) at the Kiev State Art Institute (now - the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture), where the artist has developed his own program and scientific and methodological manual on the specifics of teaching drawing and painting at the Faculty of Architecture.
